August 10, 1993: Tragedy Strikes Oslo

On August 10, 1993, Øystein Aarseth, professionally known as Euronymous, was found dead in Oslo, Norway. The guitarist and producer was a central figure in the black metal scene, best known for his role in the band Mayhem. Euronymous was just 25 years old at the time of his death, which was ruled a murder by police investigators.

The Rise of Mayhem

Formed in 1984, Mayhem quickly became known for their intense live performances and controversial image. Euronymous, who served as the band's guitarist and co-founder, was influential in shaping the sound and aesthetics of what would come to be known as the Norwegian black metal scene. He also ran the record label Deathlike Silence Productions and the record shop Helvete, a key gathering place for black metal musicians and fans.

The Murder and Aftermath

Euronymous's death was the result of a stabbing by Varg Vikernes, a fellow musician and member of the band Burzum. The murder caused a significant rift within the black metal community, leading to a series of events that would further propel the genre into infamy. Vikernes was arrested shortly after the incident and later sentenced to 21 years in prison for murder and arson.

Legacy and Influence

Euronymous's impact on black metal music and culture remains notable. His work with Mayhem, particularly the album "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas," released posthumously in 1994, is often cited as a cornerstone of the genre. The band's notoriety grew following these events, cementing their place in metal history. For more on the band and its influence, see Mayhem's profile on AllMusic and this detailed history).
